How To Use Self-Weeding Transfer Paper?

Self-weeding transfer papers are now trendy in the fashion industry. Especially for people who are willing for a small startup or an online shop, it can be a lifesaver. So, how to use self-weeding transfer paperaccurately?

First off, print your design on self-weeding paper. When your paper is ready, place it on your fabric where the ink is facing the material. Heat press the fabric for about 30 minutes with at least 100℃. Once done, gently remove the paper.

You need a lot of practice to execute the whole procedure flawlessly. The result might vary depending on the paper or ink quality, temperature and time, placement of the paper, etc.

What Is Self-Weeding Paper?

Self-weeding transfer papers are printable papers that are compatible with laser printers. Interestingly, they only print the image that you want to execute. So, there will be no need to eliminate the background.

They also have adhesive powders built-in. The powder melts when it reaches a specific temperature. So, all you need to do is print your desired design on it, place it on your garment, heat it to set the print on, and peel the paper out.

Steps To Follow

Using weeding paper for printing is not as arduous as it sounds. In fact, it’s easier than you might think. Here are the few elementary steps that you need to follow:

Step 01: Paper selection

You’ll need two types of papers for the best result. The first one is a foil finishing paper. It will act as the transfer media. You need this paper to print your design or image on.

The second one contains adhesive powder that melts over 100 ℃. It helps to transfer the print on a variety of surfaces, including paper and fabric.

Step 02: Print your design with good quality ink

Save your favorite image in the size and shape you desire. Create a clipping path on your design to avoid background prints.

Insert the foil matte surfacing upon the multipurpose tray. Click ‘print’ on your computer and get your paper ready for pressing.

Step 03: Heat press

Set your heat press machine over 100 ℃ (around 150℃) for 90 seconds. Don’t open the lid until the lower plate is hot.

Once done, set your printed foil in the middle of the lower plate. Make sure the printed side is facing the upper lid. Put the second paper on the foil with the adhesive side facing down.

You can place a baking paper or silicone sheet on top to avoid any mess.

Step 04: Transfer design on fabric

Once you have done the heat-press, the adhesive from the second paper will coat only the printed area of the first paper. Now, place your fabric on top of the coated design print. Heat-press again for 30 seconds with the same temperature.

You can place a baking sheet on top and again press for an extra 30 seconds for a better job.

Step 05: Removal of paper from the substrate

Peel off the foil from the fabric or any other substrate only after it has cooled completely. Otherwise, it can be harmful to your skin. You might also end up removing your newly printed design.

For fixing and safety causes, run another 10 seconds heat press with a baking paper or silicone sheet on the print.

Final Words

Self-weeding transfer papers are all the buzz now in the fashion world, especially in the printing business. So, it’s evident that knowing how to use one will come in handy.

Just be sure to follow the steps as mentioned, and you should be good to go. Have fun creating new designs and printing your own custom-made tee-shirts!
