How Small Can A QR Code Be?
QR codes can be as small as 1 x 1 cm, about 0.4 x 0.4 inches; micro QR codes have very tiny dimensions. However, when printing QR codes for advertisement, we will advise you to let it take up at least 2 x 2 cm (approximately 0.8 x 0.8 inches).
No matter which scanner app you use, it is the camera that identifies the QR code and analyzes each of the data modules. As camera quality varies depending on the phone’s model, many of your audience’s smartphones will not be able to grasp the data provided by the code fully. Hence, it is best to make sure the QR code has a dimension of 2 x 2 cm.
QR Code Distance To Size Ratio
When printing your QR code, you need to keep in mind that it will be scanned from a distance; for adverts on billboards, this distance will be a couple of hundred meters, whereas, for fliers, this will be a couple of feet away. So how should the size of the QR code change depending on scanning distance?
After lots of thinking on this topic, experts reached a conclusion that the ratio between the scanning distance and size should be 1/10. That is, if your scanning distance is 10 inches, then the minimum width and height of your QR code should be 1 inch. Following this ratio ensures that the necessary information is conveyed to scanners properly.
QR Code Minimum Size
Micro QR codes are the smallest and have a minimum size of 1 x 1 cm. They are petite and have 11 x 11 modules; like for every QR code, a minimum margin of 4 blocks is maintained.
As this size is too small, a large number of cameras are unable to attain the necessary information from the modules. So instead, the advertisers are asked to maintain a minimum size of 2 x 2 cm; larger sized QR codes make it easier to navigate the QR code marketing and QR code tracking.
How Big Does A QR Code Need To Be?
As the answer depends on the scanning distance, you will need to do a little experiment to find out.
Firstly, select the spot where your QR code is meant to be displayed; for example, a flier board, a sign outside a café, a billboard, etc. Once you have determined the site, look around to find possible locations from which your audience will be scanning. Next, measure the distances from the places that will display the QR code to the scanning spot and then calculate an average length. Now, divide the length by ten to get the length and breadth of your QR code. If you get a value of less than two, then discard it and go with the usual 2 x 2 cm dimension.
How Do I Reduce The Size Of My QR Code?
QR – quick response – codes need to be small in size so that users can instantly access the data they are looking for. If you are looking to minimize your QR code, you can try removing any logo or image that might be present in the center.
Besides that, the only other routes you can take are by reducing the error correction (decreases the number of data modules stored) or character count. Character counts are lowered by decreasing the number of rows and columns or by making the URL shorter.
Minimum Size For QR Code Print
As we mentioned before, the minimum size of a QR code print is 2 x 2 cm; anything that has smaller dimensions will end up not being properly scanned by smartphone cameras. Besides this, a QR code needs to have a minimum margin of four blocks and a contrasting background to make sure it gets scanned and analyzed properly.
When talking about a print, the minimum size varies depending on the distance between the scanner and the code. Scanning dimensions will be one-tenth of the scanning distance, meaning that the bigger the distance, the bigger the distance, the bigger the area of the printed code.

QR Code Resolution Requirements
One centimeter consists of 38 pixels, and as the minimum size is 2 x 2 cm, the minimum resolution will be about 76 x 76 px. If you are printing for a large billboard, it is necessary to increase the resolution to make sure the QR code does not get pixelated; a minimum resolution of 240 x 240 px needs to be maintained. If you cannot do so, then you should increase the size by 0.2 inches for every 5 rows.
